Business not as usual

Have you ever thought that your business might be stagnant? your successful wheels carved out of the road years and years ago? The law of primacy tells us: “What you learn first, you remember the longest.” Do you think you may be trapped by what you learned a long time ago in school or when you started your business?

With the exception of a few rare face-to-face meetings, I conduct my entire business on the Internet and have done so for several years. I keep outdoor meetings to a minimum and they are usually with people who are not comfortable doing business remotely. I can understand that discomfort and do my best to help those with digital problems. The time that I used to spend (reading waste) in meetings, traveling to meetings, preparing for meetings, etc., I now dedicate to running my business and learning to be better at what I do.

Using the Internet for business is a mystery to many people, especially those in traditional niches who think that having an Internet presence is limited to stagnant websites, the occasional newsletter, or trying something on Facebook or Linkedin. Sorry, but when you think like this, you are losing out to those who know how to be successful in 2012, no matter what their industry is.

The Internet is more than a game changer. It’s better than traveling by train in the days of covered wagons. It’s better than when the phone changed our method of talking to each other. The internet levels the playing field for everyone in the world who wants to have a better life and earn enough to play in that world they create.

Think about what BI (before the Internet) would have to do to land a client in St. Louis if your business was located in Dallas, Chicago, or Spokane. Suppose you live in Kearny, Nebraska and someone in Budapest, Hungary would like to have exactly what you produce. How would that Hungarian know about your product or service, not to mention the contact and the actual purchase? Today, the Internet gives you the global opportunity to engage everyone interested in your product or service, close the sale, and ship the products in minutes. That makes all of the 2,267,233,742 Internet uses in the world prospects for your product or service. Suppose, just suppose that 0.000001% of those people make a purchase of $ 10. That’s $ 22,672. What was the cost of sale? Nothing, if you know what you are doing on the Internet.

It amazes me how many people I know who don’t want to spend a penny to train or hire people who know what they are doing. It reminds me of the stingy business owners I’ve worked for who just hated paying top salespeople when salesperson income was based on products shipped to customers. Don’t sell anything, don’t do anything. Sell a lot, earn a lot. Give me a commission salesperson with a reasonable base (one should never be able to live on the base) and I am the champion for them to make millions a year. For me, this is nothing more than simple common sense.

So, let’s go back to the Internet. How do you reach those people around the world? Ah, grasshopper, the answer is everywhere, on YouTube. Yes, that website your kids go to when they want to see funny animal tricks or stupid people jumping from buildings into swimming pools and often missing the mark. Look at this video:

Now what do you think of the internet and YouTube as a place to engage your future customers and update your current ones?
