HP Z840 Workstation Design and Build

The HP Z840 is built in such a way that it provides high-level computing and display. The HP Z840 enables the user to achieve the performance they need with the ability to support two latest generation Intel® Xeon® E5 -2600 V3 processors for up to 44 total processor cores in one system.

The sides feature gorgeous brushed aluminum with HP printed into the metal. This is surrounded by an incognito black bezel frame. The HP Z840 has two handles on top to make it easy to carry this heavy machine.

The Z840 has a tool-less chassis that is quite heavy compared to other video editing workstations due to possible upgrades and ease of service.

The HP Z840 has a slotted front with a DVD-RW drive in the middle. Below is a memory card reader. Just to the side of the front panel are four USB 3.0 ports with a power and reset button and auxiliary input and output ports.

The right side of the tower has a handle that opens the door.

Once opened, the HP Z840 stores everything in a very nice and smooth plastic cover that doesn’t require tools. With ease, the user can change memory, CPUs, drives or video cards with the click of one or two tabs.

Internal parts are protected with strategically placed plastic covers that keep airflow efficient and directed to where it’s needed most. The processors are cooled by multiple fans directing air to and from each processor, with each processor having its own fan and three exhaust fans on the side.

The low acoustic chassis also provides integrated dual Gb Ethernet and is also lockable and 5U rack mountable. It also contains space for 5 PCIe Gen3 and 2 PCIe Gen2 slots, 16 DIMM slots, 10 drive bays, 6 SATA/8 SAS ports, a 15-in-1 media card reader, four front-mounted USB3 ports for charging devices, and also four USB 3.0 and two USB 2.0 ports on the rear for multiple connections.

The HP Z840 can store up to 512 GB of DDR4-2133 RAM and comes with an NVIDIA Quadro K2200 graphics card.

Optional Thunderbolt 2 technology enables the connection of fast external peripherals for transfer speeds of up to 20 Gb/s.

Although quite large and heavy, this workstation is exactly what is needed to make video production fast and hassle-free. Using the vastly expandable options, the user can specify exactly what they need while balancing cost and performance.
