The Bichon Frize: Not a fancy French restaurant (or maybe it is), but a sweet family dog

According to dog historians, the Bichon Frize appears to have appeared out of nowhere in the Mediterranean area sometime in the Middle Ages.

Can’t you see that?

“Gino, have you seen this English Chappie’s new play, Shakespeare? It’s about our Julius Caesar and … Holy Knights Templar! Where did all the little white dogs come from all of a sudden?”

Seriously, he was a favorite of European royalty at the time, but no one knows exactly where he came from or how the breed originated.

Anyway, how do you become a dog historian?

Appearance

The Bichon can best be described as the feeling of being the softest, fluffiest stuffed dog you will ever own. The dense undercoat of the hair is thick and smooth and its outer coat, although slightly thicker, is curly. This combination makes the bichon feel luxurious and velvety, and the fur immediately lifts up when you touch it. It really makes you think that the dog would bounce if you dropped it. Please do not do it.

Most bichons are between 9 and 12 inches tall and weigh between 10 and 14 pounds. They can expect an active lifespan of about 12-15 years.

Personality

Bichon Frize are playful and affectionate, but they like you to be gentle with them.

They tend to get along with children and other animals and most of them do very well in obedience training. Although, you will probably have trouble training them at home for some reason.

Overall, this is an excellent companion dog for almost everyone and all situations. Country, city and suburbs, families and seniors. This little fluff ball is good for all of these.

Grooming and exercise

The Bishon Frize will require extensive brushing and daily grooming to maintain its beautiful appearance and remain untangled. In fact, it is recommended that you get a professional grooming every eight to twelve weeks.

On the plus side, a Bichon is perfectly content with a leisurely walk or two a day mixed with some playtime.

The ASPCA recommends that it is extremely important to get your Bishon Frize from a reputable breeder to avoid breed-related health problems. These can include epilepsy and dental problems.
