What does the Xbox ring of light mean?

All Xbox 360 consoles have a ring of light, which is a circle of four LEDs, with a green LED in the middle. This ring is used to indicate to the user what state the Xbox is in and allows the console user to find out what state the console is in. Each of the quadrants of the ring has a number: one for the upper left, two for the upper right, three for the lower left, and four for the lower right. This remains the same whether the console is vertical or horizontal.

The normal pattern of lights is that the green LED is lit in the center, and the dials light up each time a controller is connected. If three controllers are connected, three quadrants will light.
