A Mother’s Life – Surface Bolts Are Complete Lifesavers

It’s fair to say that life as a mom is no easy feat and anyone with children under the age of five will understand the stress of watching over their little ones, especially when more than one child is involved. Safety is such a vital issue when it comes to young children as they are still learning to understand what is wrong and what is right. There have been far too many incidents over the years where a child ate or drank something that could be harmful and in some cases fatal to her health. As adults, we know not to drink a bottle of bleach, but young children don’t know any different. That is why it is very important to keep harmful substances under lock and key, so that they are out of your reach.

The easiest way to keep your little ones from accessing things they shouldn’t is to add a lock or deadbolt to the door or cabinet of your choice. I personally went for antique brass door latches over the locks as they were more in keeping with the tone of the house and to be honest seemed easier to fit. However, when placing the deadbolt or lock, I highly recommend that you place it somewhere out of reach. When I first installed the locks on the bathroom, I was naive to think that with a lock on the door the children would not be able to enter. I will never forget the day I walked into the bathroom and my youngest son was sitting on the floor holding the bottle of toilet bleach. Fortunately, he couldn’t get past the crooked lid, but at that point I realized the bolts had to be much higher. That night my husband came home, and after helping me put the children to bed, we went around the house and put all the bolts up higher. Since then I have had peace of mind knowing that my cheeky little monsters cannot reach substances that are hazardous to their health.

Now, I am quite aware of how my house looks, especially when we have spent so much time and money to make it look idyllic. So you can imagine my reaction when my generic web search for studs came up with these huge bindings that looked like complete eyesores! I knew that my children’s safety was more important, however, I was sure that I could find something that would fit the style of the kitchen and bathroom, as well as protect my children at the same time. In keeping with the style of both the kitchen and bathroom, I decided I wanted brushed chrome bathroom latches to suit its minimalist bravura, and to match the farmhouse style, I opted for door latches in a bronze in the kitchen
