Dinosaur Themed Bedrooms – Creative Design Tips

Dinosaur-themed bedrooms are perhaps one of the most popular options among young children. If you want to create a dinosaur room for your little one, I have some tips and advice to help you create a unique room design. It can be fun to get your child involved in the design process as you can investigate dinosaurs and their habitat together. What kind of dinosaurs will be integrated into the design? Tyrannosaurus Rex or Pterodactyls? Will the habitat reflect the jungle or the desert?

Although many designers feel that applying color to the walls is the first step to take, I recommend shopping for the bedding first. I always use the color of the bedding as inspiration to paint the walls. With dinosaur bedding, there are many options available. There are dinosaur comforter sets and comforters in a wide range of colours. Most of the time, bedding is blue, green, or tan, and there are a few variations of dinosaur bedding in earthy colors. This bedding usually shows images of various types of dinosaurs, as well as the jungle habitat.

Two approaches that can be taken are to buy bedding that depicts dinosaurs, or you can use a solid duvet with cushions that have dinosaurs on them. Either works fine. Depending on the colors of the bedding, you can usually opt for shades of blue, green, or tan. I find that going for a neutral color, like tan, can make it easier to change the room’s design at a later date. Wall borders, cushions, wall art, and bedding can be added to create vibrant pops of color.

Dinosaur Theme Bedroom Tips:

1. Once the walls are painted, a dinosaur-themed wallpaper border can be added. Other options include dinosaur wall stencils, murals, or hand-painted jungle scenes with prehistoric-looking plants. Amidst the large foliage, T-Rex, flying pterodactyls and triceratops can be added. For those who can’t paint, you can also buy wall stickers or wallpaper murals. One creative idea is to paint or apply a purchased mural of a dinosaur scene and add a wooden frame around it to represent a window. Silk jungle vines can be purchased at craft stores and hung from ceilings.

2. Dinosaur stuffed animals can be placed throughout the room, as well as pillows on the bed or floor. There are many accessories available for this theme such as stackable dinosaur bins, dinosaur light fixtures and lamps, stools, dinosaur headboards, bedding, sheets, and frames.

3. There is also a wide range of dinosaur artwork and prints available, or it can be very simple to create your own. You can cut pictures out of magazines or books, put them in frames and hang them on the wall, or arrange them in small groups on dressers and shelves. There are many stock photo images that can be purchased for a minimal price online. Artists create ‘vector’ images of all kinds of dinosaurs. They can be printed and framed. If you’re familiar with Adobe Photoshop or a similar program, you can add your child’s name to the image, adjust colors, combine multiple images, and so on.

4. Dinosaur footprints can be stamped on the walls. I’ve seen dinosaur-themed bedrooms where parents have done a project with their kids using papier-mâché. They make large bone shapes using wads of newspaper and paper mache over the top of the shape. The dry form is painted an off-white color.

5. Many of the dinosaur-themed bedding sets also have matching dinosaur sheets, curtains, and adorable rugs. Sideboards and bookshelves are a great place to display molded plastic dinosaur figurines. Plants can be added throughout the room to create a jungle effect. Other items that can be added are dinosaur skeleton models, an archaeologist hat, books, and magazines. Do you have a dinosaur museum nearby? This would be a great place for some family photos for the room. Or hang a chalkboard with dinosaur magnets.

I hope you found these tips useful. Have fun!
