Vintage Christmas Lights – Retro Design Made New Again

Retro design is right now. And it could be for a long time to come. It could be that this is because some of the best and most beautiful designs come from the 1940s and 1950s and it could be because many baby boomers look back on those days fondly. Whatever the reason, the internet is the hotspot if you’re looking for vintage Christmas lights.

Some of the lights that you can find that fall under this style are reproductions. In many cases, that’s a good thing because the original lights got so hot that you could easily burn yourself if you touched them. If you’re a baby boomer, you might even remember your mom or dad telling you to be careful with the hot Christmas lights and not to touch them with your fingers.

They also had a tendency to make tree needles very hot. That wasn’t so great and if you didn’t keep your tree well watered, you risked setting your tree on fire. So playing retro lights is a very good idea.

One of the really cool designs on those vintage lights were the little bubble lights. These were small vials filled with a mysterious type of oil that bubbled when heated by the heat from the light bulb inside the casing. They were very cool then and very chic today.

Another type of vintage Christmas light that was very popular in the 1950s was the small electric Candolier candle holder. These were in so many windows during the winter season that it was almost like it was a rule that every house had to have at least one of these lit in the window at all times.

Sure they were a lot safer than putting a burning candle with a real flame on your windowsill, but they still got pretty hot. And from time to time it caused little problems with the electricity when they blew the fuse in the house. In the past there were so many electrical circuits in houses and you only had to check 6 or 8 fuses before finding the one that had blown.

Reproductions are good now because they are much safer in many ways, but still eat to keep the look of authentic vintage Christmas lights for the lovely nostalgic look.
