How to stop a border collie from digging in your yard

All dog lovers and dog owners know that with all the cuteness and play, dogs come with a lot of bad clothes that can ruin many of their owners’ items, from shoes and clothes to their backyard. It’s not easy to get them to stop, and even if you have them trained, they’ll still do destructive things while you’re away from home.

The border collie is a very energetic and intelligent breed of dog that will become annoying and destructive if you don’t know how to train it and how to make it obey you. Some of the bad habits that a border collie has is digging holes and chewing on different objects around the house. If you have a backyard, digging will be more of a pain than chewing, so you’ll want to make your dog stop. To prevent a border collie from digging, you need to find an alternative way to entertain him or make a compromise and give up part of your backyard.

If you do not want to ruin the appearance of your lawn, you should build a fence that protects it and does not allow the passage of any animals. It is a cruel method as border collies have almost infinite energy and cannot stay in one place. You will have to walk your dog at least four or five times a day, and from time to time supervise him while he is in the garden, letting him only sniff around. It will also be difficult for you, since you must have a lot of time and energy to walk your border collie.

Also, since you restrict his access to the backyard and work all day, he will get very bored if he starts chewing on household items. This type of dog has a lot of energy and without consuming it, it will transform your house into a disaster. One solution to this problem is to make him exercise frequently, for example you can take him for a long walk in the morning that can last from half an hour to an hour.

If you’re willing to compromise and provide your border collie with a piece of your backyard, you need to know how to improve it so your dog will like and use it. First of all, make sure that it doesn’t ruin any of your flower beds and that it doesn’t make your house look bad. Second, choose a spot that is no smaller than four by four feet and one foot deep. Make a mix of soft soil and earth and place it in the hole. You can even plant grass or flowers on top to make it look more attractive to your dog.

Another step is to bury some of your dog’s toys in the hole and then call him so he can see what treasures you can dig up. After he sees that most of his toys are there and some dog treats as well, his Border Collie won’t resist digging some of them up for him. If there is a tendency to dig holes in places other than the designated one, you need to catch him on the spot and firmly say “No”, and immediately take him to the “litter box” and show him again why such a place is more suitable for digging.

In conclusion, the best solution to stop your border collie from digging is to take him out for a walk or create a special area for him to play. You can also try covering places you don’t want them to dig with small rocks or bird wire.
